Second Lesson:
Swatow Wares
Swatow
wares are Chinese porcelains made in 16th and 17th
century. The
word "Swotaw" was originally from a province
located in Southern part of China.
Swatow wares are believed to be made in the
Jiangxi, Fujian, Yannan, and Guangdong provinces.
The noticeable point of Swatow wares is the
bottom part of each piece was adhering by the sands
as well as its
cool, hard, luminescent quality of the stark white
background provided by hand-painted decoration.
The Swatow wares are so distinctive with
palette dominated by iron red, turquoise and black;
however, it may also be decorated in underglaze blue
or in slip. In
16th and 17th centuries, Swatow wares were a coarse
provincial ware that were imported into Europe by the
Dutch, and were considered to be a popular item back
that point in time in Europe.
